Susan Marenda King, MD, FACS

Otology & Neurotology

Dr. King is a Board Certified Otolaryngologist with additional training and Board Certification in the specialties of Otology and Neurotology. Her clinical practice focuses on the treatment of disorders of the ear and related skull base structures, particularly disorders of hearing and balance. She surgically treats hearing loss, tumors and infections of the temporal bone, cranial nerves, and related skull base structures. She is the Co-Founder of Ear Medical Group and has been in private practice since 1996. She is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at UT Health, San Antonio.

 

Dr. King graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985 with Summa Cum Laude honors. She completed a Research Honors Thesis in the Molecular and Cell Biology Lab. She attended medical school at Creighton University School of Medicine and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. It was here that she began her interest in hearing and balance disorders and studied the use of computerized dynamic posturography in children with dizziness and balance disorders at Boys Town National Research Hospital.

 

She completed her internship and residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in the Departments of General Surgery and Otolaryngology. She was named the Department of Surgery Intern of the Year in 1990. During her residency she published several articles including the lead article in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery on localization of cytokines in cholesteatoma tissue in chronic ear infections. She completed subspecialty training in Neurotology at the Texas Neurosciences Institute under the direction of Dr. James E. Olsson. During the end of her fellowship, she travelled to Barcelona, Spain and Copenhagen, Denmark for additional surgical training.

 

Dr. King has been a co-author of numerous academic articles on topics of minimally invasive cochlear implant surgery in children in an outpatient setting, and early activation of cochlear implants. Her current research interests are focused on the restoration of hearing. She has been an investigator for numerous clinical studies for both device manufacturers and developers of medicines for hearing restoration.

 

She is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, the Texas Association of Otolaryngology and the American Neurotology Society.

 

Dr. King has served on the Board of Directors of Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children for the past 19 years, including two years as Board Chairman. She has been recognized as a Texas Super Doctor in Texas Monthly Magazine each year since 2006.
